The Adam J. Burgasser Endowed Chair of Astrophysics

This year I made a move from my faculty position at MIT to one at UC San Diego. While there were many wonderful and positive things I was leaving behind in the process (good friends, brilliant students, phenomenal staff and a supportive and scientifically engaging department), the one thing that my backside will miss the most is my Eames lounge chair. I purchased this design icon as a “thinking chair”, but it was a frequent hit with visitors, students and of course the other junior faculty. Indeed, not long after I had made public my decision to head out to San Diego, I received emails like the following from my colleagues:

“If you are not taking it with you right away, can I keep your Eames Chair for “safeguarding” in my office? I promise to give it back whenever you either come back or take it with you..”

Unfortunately, this was not an item that could leave MIT, so it was clear that it had to be passed on to a deserving recipient. But how to pick one person in a department of superstars? Thus was born:

Design Colossus: The Incomparable Charles Eames

Icons in design are a great rarity and its not everyday that one comes along but, when they do, they change the face of design and one such name that certainly falls into this “icon” category is that of the truly inimitable and endlessly inventive, Charles Eames.

Born in St. Louis in 1907, Eames was a designer quite unlike any other and he thoroughly rejected the mundane furniture that was prevalent during the mid 20th century and decided that a change was order and, along with his contemporaries like George Nelson, Harry Bertoia and Eero Aarnio, he was one of the driving forces behind the Modernist movement in furniture design – towards the contemporary style pieces that we still witness today.

Eames Lounge Chair

Released in 1956, Eames Lounge Chair was the first chair that Charles and Ray Eames designed for a high-end market. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York s Museum of Modern Art. Our modern versions are definitely not “copies”, but there are enough similarities in the steel base style and segmented bodies to imagine they could be distant relations.

A 15 Minute Film by Charles and Ray Eames

Day of the Dead, a1957 film by the famous artists and designers Charles and Ray Eames, explores the wild and haunted Mexican celebration of All Souls Day–on November 1. Just 15 minutes long, Day of the Dead shows one striking image after another–from mountains to marigolds to the folk art and the extraordinary people.

The film considers everything from the Aztec influence to the preoccupations with animals and memory and death stirred by the holiday. Skulls abound. Dia de los Muertos could hardly ask for more attuned and efficient (15 minutes!) artists to interpret its complex celebration and history. Sit back in your Eames chair and watch.

Essential Eames: A Herman Miller Exhibition ~ My Conquered Treasures

Having being to the Essential Eames Exhibition on the opening day. How could I miss the souvenir section, (not to mention that I am a design buff)? I spent a good 20 minutes in the souvenir sections looking through all the products on offer. Of course, the very book that this exhibition is based on, “An Eames Primer“, is available if you are interested and I recalled that it is a limited edition print for this exhibition. So, it is worth collecting if you want to get the book anyway. Other books on the Eameses are also available and small items on this theme such as stationary (pencil and card holders) as well as postcards and posters are available for sale. Even cameras are on sale as this exhibition also showcased Charles Eames photography works.

What caught me was a set of miniature chairs consisting some of the Eameses most iconic designs. There are 3 sub-sets which could be bought individually for SGD$39 or a full set for SGD$117. Well, you guessed it, I could not help but get the whole set! Even when taking it out for pictures, I just could not bear to take them out of the protective plastics. So, apologies for the poor images.
